3.7 TECHNICAL UPGRADING, INFORMATION TO THE SHIP & TECHNICAL ADVICE MEMO (TAM)
3.7.1 Technical Upgrading & Information to the Ship
The technical department, from its operating experience and through contacts with the professional bodies, publications, specialist contractors and equipment manufacturers, is to monitor developments in new and updated technology. Where it appears that there are benefits to be gained, the Tech Director is to discuss a programme of possible improvements with the owner of the vessel. With the agreement of the owner the Tech Manager is to initiate a trial period for any modifications or upgraded equipment. The TSI is to discuss the trials requirements with any relevant manufacturers and the vessel's staff.
The TSI is to produce a report on the trial period findings and a final decision will be made with the owner as to the benefits or otherwise of the modifications or equipment.
Any modifications or upgrades to equipment that are carried out will be subject to the management of change procedures and must be adequately documented both onboard the vessel and in the management office ashore.
Information relating to the manufacturers' service bulletins and modification news will be sent to the vessels as detailed in the communications chapter of this manual.
3.7.2 Technical Advice Memo (TAM)
TAMs are designed to give first-hand technical information to all office fleet.
The content is such that it will explain or bring to the attention of various problems experienced either within the various Fleets or within the Marine Industry.
Marine Operations Technical will be responsible for issuing the TAMs but all offices are encouraged to forward any information that they feel may be of interest.
